Story #4

Anthony Henderson
Team Leader, Be the One
Palm Beach County, FL

Be the One started using Choosing the Best WAY, PATH, and LIFE in 2001, and last year we served 3,500 students. Ultimately the success of the programs depends on how well you make them suit each community. We’re starting mentoring and community service to have more of a long-term effect. I tell students there are only two types of pain in life: the pain of discipline and the pain of regret. The pain of discipline weighs only a few ounces; the pain of regret weighs a ton. Because the choices youth make can affect others, we’re also helping them develop connectness with their family, peers, and community.

Choosing the Best has helped Be the One cultivate an environment in south Florida for youth to make positive life choices, abstain from premarital sex, and be educated about healthy relationships. I strongly suggest that schools get this curriculum, and to do it yesterday. It’s very thorough and interactive, and that is what kids need to keep their attention.”
